.Net Globalization/Localization Basics

May 13, 2008 20:37 by bcanonica
Ok so I have been working on this project over at InterviewStream for about 3 weeks now.  For any of you out their who actually have experience globalizing a web application you know that MSDN's documentation isn't as transparent as you would like.  A good starting point for anyone who is starting a project is http://asp.net, Scott Hanselman has done a great job with Wiki Internationalization section.  You will find some great links to articles that are some must reads and even some really great videos that will help you get started.  Scott Hanselman's blog also pointed me to Microsoft's translator.  All you have to do is type in the address of your site it returns a translated version of the text for you.  If you don't know about Rick Stahl, take a minute and read Rick Stahl's article on localization, he has a great code sample that is great after you have become a little more comfortable with the basics.  If you are lucky enough to find an article on the topic for you are researching your usually won't be disappointed.  At the bottom of his article he has an amazon listing for Guy Smith Ferier's book on internationalization.  Though the book answer all of your questions it will again be a good basis for you when you are starting out.  In my future posts I will show you some of tips and tricks that will save you time and even post some code samples and tools that have helped me through out the project.
